FRIDA AND DIEGO CROSS STITCH PATTERN
Designed by Barbara Ana this is an extraordinary tribute in cross stitch to the couple of Mexican artists, Frida Kalho and Diego Rivera.
Diego is 36 years old when they first meet. While he is an already established artist, famous for his large frescoes celebrating Mexico's cultural heritage the history of its revolution, Frida is only 15, but it will be love at first sight for her. They are married 7 years later, and the relationship that will follow will be of the most tumultuous kind.
Frida painted mainly self-portraits, but there are some rare portraits of their couple, in particular their wedding. This embroidered portrait, Barbara Ana's own vision, celebrates the love, the couple with its age difference, their contradictions, and the exuberant life of the two artists.
The embroidery is full of symbolism. Frida seems fragile, in white dress, hair interwoven with flowers, offering a burning heart with a coil of thorns. Diego is static, seated on a chair, a certain stoutness accentuating their difference. The snake curled around the tree is evocative of temptation, while the exuberant tropical vegetation seems by contrast to offer shelter to their love.
